FROM WIND AND MOVEMENT TO ENERGY

A REQUEST FROM A GREEN TRICYCLE

When it comes to the environment, Qatzrin takes a leading stance. A new, innovative, recycling center was recently established in Qatzrin. The center, called “Hapele,” meaning

Qatzrin mayor, Sami Bar Lev, and Gideon Ezra, the Minister for the Environment in Israel, an enthusiastic supporter of Hapele in Qatzrin.“The Miracle,” stands for the idea that modern humans consume too much and could use our resources more efficiently. One of the main goals at Hapele, is to explore new and alternative sources for energy and to educate about the importance of protecting our environment.

Students participate in a “From Trash to Treasure” workshop.“Hapele” is operated by students – the children of Qatzrin – in the belief that significant changes on behalf of the environment must include and engage the younger generation. Therefore, every child in Qatzrin spends three full school days each year, participating in Hapele workshops entitled, “FROM TRASH TO TREASURE.”

The workshop on energy emphasizes the tremendous effort and resources it takes to produce energy.

The children begin with a simple energy seesaw. As the children ride up and down, the movement of the seesaw serves as a pump that fills up a battery. The children see how their effort charges a battery to light up a bulb.

The cost of each energy seesaw, including pump is 2000$.

The children work even harder to produce energy using energy bicycles. A number of old bicycles are connected via their pedals to batteries, light bulbs and even a sound system, to bring home the point that energy takes effort. When the children stop pedaling, the lights turn off and the music stops.

Each bicycle and battery costs 2000$.

In addition to the hands-on workshops, a wind turbine on the roof of Hapele gives the students a practical lesson in energy production using renewable resources. The turbine actually converts wind into electricity, demonstrating that renewable alternatives do exist and there is no need to deplete natural resources.

The cost of the turbine is $3,000.

Hapele needs your help...

for the next generation of Qatzrin, and for the environment.

A small investment for you – a big change for the planet!
